This setting of Paul Lawrence Dunbar’s poem of the same name was commissioned by the Fond du Lac High School Concert Choir and their director Cory Schneider. Melodic exchanges between trebles and tenors/basses create a musical dialogue between the musicians–capturing the essence of this expressive and meaningful text: “you are welcome.”

This short work captures the beauty and wonder of a star in sky found in this iconic text by Jane Taylor. An original melody and moments of expansive harmony express the simplicity of a guiding light found in the night sky.

With an opening melody that hearkens to Henry Purcell’s touchstone setting, dissonant harmonies and metrical shifts take us in a very different direction. The discord of the piece seeks to emphasize the longing and need of one who feels unimportant, small, and like a stranger to God. The piece slowly builds several times, eventually reaching out with a tremendous crescendo followed by an unresolved plea, “hear my cry.”

This benediction begins with Isaiah 41, “Do not be afraid, for I am with with you…” and continues with words of tremendous love and promise. With the entrance of the Matthew text, “Behold, I am with you always…” the mood shifts from uplifting to mysterious as it is sometimes difficult to sense God’s presence in our everyday lives. The basses here represent the everlasting love of God.  The words below from Dione and the texts from Isaiah and Matthew served as the inspiration for this piece

From Dione Peterson Belling, June 17, 2016

Today I lost a childhood friend, the one I played hide and seek with, the one I giggled and laughed with, the one I shared secrets with, and the one I tried to learn to play softball with! As we got older our lives became more involved with music, school, and love.

She fell in love with a handsome young medical student her brother brought home from college. They married shortly after her high school graduation. They moved away to Georgia where she became the faithful wife and wonderful mother of two children and she shared her music with piano students.  I lost myself in my music.

I remember seeing her parents from time to time and inquired about her. They were always proud to fill me in on her latest happenings and that of her lovely family.

Many years passed but I would usually get a letter and a picture in the Christmas season updating me on her life. It always seemed that they were having beautiful warm weather and we were freezing up north.  Then her health, my career, and my caregiving duties seemed to separate us for a time.

One day after I had left my life in Sioux Falls and was teaching in Faribault I received a Facebook message from her. Facebook was new and we were pretty excited to find each other! From then on we kept in contact with Ralph responding at times when she was too ill to do so. Little did I know that this reconnection would bring me the greatest gift I could ever imagine!  Our Facebook connection would eventually lead me to her brother…the one I once told her I had a middle school crush on! Lyle and I quickly realized our lives had similarities, having both experienced care giving and the loss of a loved one. I will always remember her squeals of delight when she learned we planned to marry.

Last New Years Eve Donna and Ralph signed the papers that joined Lyle and me in marriage. After all these years Donna was still making me laugh and make beautiful memories. I don’t think either of us learned to play softball. But we sure enjoyed talking about “remember when?” Now after all these years of illnesses and pain, I pray she rests in peace. She will live on in the lives of her children, her adoring husband, and all of us who loved her.

Lyle and I will miss the late evening phone calls that lasted for hours and had all of us laughing so hard I sometimes choked or cried.  Life will be different, but Donna Belling Kolbeck is not gone from our lives….only her little fragile body.

May the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus…

Samuel Longfellow’s words from 1864 dramatically depict the bitterness of a Minnesota winter, “…all the earth lies dead and drear.” “And yet, God’s love is not withdrawn” is Longfellow’s faithful response to the winters in our lives. This a cappella setting for SATB choir uses changes of mode and dynamic to contrast the stark cold of the season with the warmth of “summer’s joyous rays.” Composed in memory of Barbara Aspaas (1941-2014).

‘Tis winter now; the fallen snow
Has left the heav’ns all coldly clear;
Through leafless boughs the sharp winds blow,
And all the earth lies dead and drear.

And yet God’s love is not withdrawn;
His life within the keen air breathes,
His beauty paints the crimson dawn,
And clothes the boughs with glitt’ring wreaths.

And though abroad the sharp winds blow,
And skies are chill, and frosts are keen,
Home closer draws her circle now,
And warmer glows her light within.

O God! who giv’st the winter’s cold
As well as summer’s joyous rays,
Us warmly in Thy love enfold
And keep us through life’s wintry days.

Thomas Hood’s poem, The Stars are with the Voyager, has inspired many lyric and lush choral settings of this text. As I read Hood’s story of “constant love,” I feel the inevitable promise found there, but also a sense of timeless adventure. At the beginning of this setting, the piano represents the rolling waves of the sea—relentless and full of energy—and the unyielding march of time. The fourth verse becomes contemplative following the setting of the sun and grows into the “brighter day” before a layering of the opening melody that moves into the distance.

The stars are with the voyager Wherever he may sail;
The moon is constant to her time; The sun will never fail;

But follow, follow round the world, The green earth and the sea,
So love is with the lover’s heart, Wherever he may be.

Wherever he may be, the stars Must daily lose their light;
The moon will veil her in the shade; The sun will set at night.

The sun may set, but constant love Will shine when he’s away;
So that dull night is never night, And day is brighter day.

–Thomas Hood (1799-1845)

Psalm 46 was composed during the height of the global pandemic and cultural upheaval of 2020. The text reflects the challenges of our time (the nations rage, the kingdoms are moved, and the earth melted, what desolation has been made of the earth…) as well as a comforting response (Be still, there is a river whose streams make glad the city of God).

This work was selected for performance at the NCCO 2022 National Conference.
