This special commission from Smithfield Middle School for the Varsity Treble Choir’s performance at the 2020 Texas Music Educators Association Annual Conference sets the words of parents responding to the prompt, “What I wish for you…”

A quiet and thoughtful beginning leads into words of encouragement and love that culminate in a powerful statement, “Know who you are.” A unique and stirring piece for treble choirs of middle school age and up.

What I wish for you is
to be strong, and courageous, and fearless,
to grow in grace as you grow in knowledge, that you become the person you were meant to be, to feel confident in your body,
to find your place in this world,
to know who you are.

What I wish for you:
to rise, to dream, to feel, to love, have faith that is bigger than your fears, to live every moment with purpose, set no limitations on who you are,
to widen the circle, to never stop chasing your dreams, to rise above.

What I wish for you: feel your feelings, decide for yourself, set boundaries, know your worth, use your words, be heard,
see the world, fall in love, open your heart, celebrate wildly, know who you are.

What I wish for you…

This popular work, with flowing piano accompaniment, shares the words of J. Raymond Cope. This piece shares a message of inner-strength and dedication to a “higher purpose, a nobler dream, a more perfect life together nourished in wisdom and love.”

Spirit of Life that is within us and about us: in each of us there is some margin of despair and hope, some overtone of creation’s song; in each of us the welling ache of life; the being and the becoming; the promise and the hunger; the one resurgent moment that speaks of eternity, that may pass from memory but is never forgotten.

In each of us there is some margin of discovery; some truant shadow of tomorrow; in each of us, an un-named need, a purpose brooding and uncertain, waiting to be realized.

Spirit of Life that is within us and about us: we rededicate ourselves to a higher purpose, a nobler dream, a more perfect life together nourished in wisdom and love.

This arrangement of Lord Jesus Christ Be Present Now and Love Divine will be a satisfying challenge for your sopranos and altos. Soaring melodies and a strong piano accompaniment provide your singers the chance to explore expressive singing. A strong coda sets a text for all to hear and share: “and let your light within us shine!”

This setting of ‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime was created for the Manitou Singers of St. Olaf College and their conductor, Dr. Therees Tkach Hibbard. I was asked to re-arrange my SATB setting of the same tune and text (published by earthsongs) but could not come up with a workable solution. Instead, I started over with a setting for accompanied treble choir and viola knowing the skill and musicianship of violist Dr. Charles Gray, Professor of Music (Viola, Violin, String Literature and Pedagogy).

Three tunes are incorporated in this arrangement: Une Jeune Pucelle; Vom Himmel Hoch; and, Veni, Emmanuel. The first tune, Une Jeune Pucelle, is the ‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime melody, and first appears in fragments within the opening viola solo. The second theme, Vom Himmel Hoch, is found in the viola part in measure 30, and implies the text, “From heaven above to earth I come To bear good news to every home; Glad tidings of great joy I bring, Whereof I now will say and sing…” which matches the unfolding drama of the ‘Twas in the Moon story. The third tune, Veni, Emmanuel, comes in response to the viola solo with the interjection: “Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel, shall come to you, O Israel.”
