'Tis Winter

Samuel Longfellow's words from 1864 dramatically depict the bitterness of a Minnesota winter, “...all the earth lies dead and drear.” “And yet, God's love is not withdrawn” is Longfellow's faithful response to the winters in our lives. This a cappella setting for SATB choir uses changes of mode and dynamic to contrast the stark cold of the season with the warmth of “summer's joyous rays.”

A Closed Path

This a cappella setting of words from Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali, published in 1912, explores the emotions of a story-teller approaching the end of his life. The essence of the text addresses adversity and how one can draw strength from faith, strength from being rooted in something, strength from having something to believe: “I thought that my voyage had come to its end... But I find that thy will knows no end in me.”

You Are Mine

This benediction begins with Isaiah 41, “Do not be afraid, for I am with with you...” and continues with words of tremendous love and promise. With the entrance of the Matthew text, “Behold, I am with you always...” the mood shifts from uplifting to mysterious as it is sometimes difficult to sense God’s presence in our everyday lives. The basses here represent the everlasting love of God.  The words below from Dione and the texts from Isaiah and Matthew served as the inspiration for this piece.
